Beyond the Gold Tier: Why We Stopped Ranking the Stars
For years, the ultimate badge of honor for any remote national park or desert reserve was securing a “Gold Tier” designation from DarkSky International. It was the astronomical equivalent of a Michelin Star—a guarantee that the location offered some of the most pristine, uncompromisingly dark night skies left on the planet.
But if you look at the DarkSky registry today, those metallic rankings are gone. To understand why, you have to look at what happens when you turn conservation into a competition.
The Problem with “Bronze”
Under the old system, a location’s tier was determined almost entirely by its photometric measurements—literally, how dark the sky was.
This created an unintended problem which interfered with the organization’s broader goal of protecting dark skies as human settlement expands. The old system heavily favored places that were already geographically isolated. A park in the middle of a sprawling western desert could do the bare minimum for conservation and easily secure a Gold Tier rating simply because nobody lived within a hundred miles.
Meanwhile, a park located an hour outside of a major metropolitan area could do everything right. They could retrofit every streetlight to point downward, pass strict local lighting ordinances, and host massive educational events for thousands of visitors. But because of the distant, unavoidable glow of the nearby city, they would only be awarded a “Bronze” rating.
For many dedicated park rangers and conservationists, “Bronze” felt like a failure. It implied third place, diminishing the incredible, hard-fought work required to protect a moderately dark sky near a populated area—work that is often much more difficult than protecting a perfectly dark sky in the middle of nowhere.
A Shift in Philosophy
DarkSky International recognized that their true mission wasn’t to rank the darkness—it was to stop light pollution. And if you want to stop light pollution, you can’t just focus on the places where it doesn’t exist yet. You have to encourage communities to fight for the stars they have left.
The tier system was actively discouraging urban and suburban areas from participating. Why spend years fighting for better lighting policies just to be told your sky is only “Bronze” quality?
To fix this, DarkSky shifted away from ranking places by how dark they are, and instead began categorizing them by what they are and how they function.
The Constellation of Categories
Dark sky locations are grouped into specific, purpose-driven categories. In this series, we will delve into each:
- Dark Sky Sanctuaries: These are the most remote, ecologically fragile places on Earth (like the Rainbow Bridge National Monument). They have absolute, uncompromising darkness, and the designation focuses on long-term preservation rather than high-volume public tourism.
- Dark Sky Reserves: These feature a pristine “dark core” area surrounded by a populated buffer zone. The communities in the buffer zone actively agree to adopt lighting policies that protect the core’s sky.
- Dark Sky Parks: Public lands (like national or state parks) that focus heavily on eco-tourism and astronomy education.
- Dark Sky Communities & Urban Places: Towns, cities, or urban parks that are actively fighting local light pollution. They may not have a view of the Andromeda Galaxy, but they are proving that thoughtful lighting can bring the stars back to populated areas.
The Legacy of Gold
While the tiers are officially a thing of the past, you will still hear the term “Gold Tier” thrown around by rangers, astrophotographers, and astronomy enthusiasts.
Parks that achieved the Gold status under the retired system are still allowed to wear the badge as a legacy honor. However, the focus is shifting to exactly where it needs to be: ensuring that whether you are deep in a high-altitude desert or standing in a suburban park, you can still look up and see the universe.
